What if primary voters agree with JD?

Written by Gila on Feb 24th, 2010.

Senator John McCain is trying to attack JD Hayworth by portraying him as a birther. The strategy is pretty high risk for a couple of reasons. The first one is simple, JD is not a full on birther. JD’s position of “It would be nice to see the birth certificate” might not seem that strange to the average Republican primary voter.

The second reason the ad might not work is this, no matter how odd the birthers seem, they are attacking President Obama. Is McCain then siding with Obama? Is McCain siding with the status quo in Washington?

Is there a little bit of birther in the average Republican primary voter, just a little doubt about Obama’s loyalty?

The senate primary is McCain’s to lose. He has tons of money and much higher name ID. If he continues with his over the top attacks on JD, he might just lose the primary. One more thing about the ad, it elevates JD’s name ID several more points. By the time this is over, every voter in Arizona will know JD Hayworth as the guy who McCain kept attacking. That might end up benefiting Hayworth.

Sarah Palin should not have answered her phone when she saw a number with an Ariaona area code flash up on her display.

Just go into massive avoidance mode for a few months.

This will be a fun primary.

  2. whatever says:

    Birthers are moronic

  3. Annie O. says:

I have to side with McCain on this one. As an Arizonan, I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that we want someone who is going to take charge instead of just pointing fingers and complaining, and it’s pretty obvious that JD isn’t the type to demonstrate leadership…

  4. Ty says:

Maybe this will help teach JD to shut his big mouth. But, then again, I think he should’ve learned that by now, at his age. I love how he’s trying to avoid the fact that he’s said it because he knows it’s bad for his campaign. Too bad, JD, your campaign is already doomed because, well, it’s you running.

  5. Sliced says:

There is no way I would vote for JD regardless of what the media portrays McCain out to be. JD has already been in Congress for too many years and nobody created his moral, legal and ehtical issues but himself. JD should not be given a second chance to re-acquire the name, “biggest boozer” “biggest blowhard” or “dumbest member in Congress” again…He did nothing for us then, he can do nothing for us now!

  6. Lindsay says:

John McCain has done so much to earn our respect and our votes. He is the one in Washington who is fighting against this mounting deficit, fighting for our Nation’s Security, fighting against government run healthcare. These are BIG issues right now and he is doing a stellar job at fighting this extreme left wing cast of characters!

  7. DeAnn says:

John McCain keeps talking about character. I’d like to know how he is going to be able to get some before the election. He doesn’t have any now.

  8. conservativerestoration says:

    JD or McCain?

McCain voted YES on the 700 billion dollar bailout.

McCain voted YES on Amnesty for illegal aliens.

McCain voted YES on Campaign Finance Reform.

McCain supports Federal regulation of Vitamins and Supplements.

McCain supports (and ran in 2008 on) a Cap and Trade (tax) program to fight so-called “global warming.”

McCain has voted YES to restrict our second amendment rights, specifically where it relates to gun shows.

The record is clear, McCain is NOT A CONSERVATIVE. He is a LIBERAL.

JD Hayworth may not be perfect, but he’s a helluva lot better than John McCain!

    Support JD Hayworth!

  9. Ron says:

John McCain “fighting for our nation’s security”…by leaving our borders wide open?

  10. Charlie W says:

    Amen Ron!!!

  11. Kevin says:

I hate to do this, but JD would appreciate the irony:

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
    Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?

“Wish You Were Here” –Pink Floyd Lyrics

Go ahead, exchange that hot air for a cool breeze. You WILL get your just deserts.

  12. Rural Watch says:

The article asks “what if…”, that answer is that McCain turns right around and runs as an Independent, just as his buddy Joe Liberman did. The question remains, “What then…”

  13. Mac says:

    JD Hayworth is a shmuck.

This whole primary is a joke, McCain is going to win, Arizonans know that JD Hayworth is a bad politician, a bad candidate, and a bad person. I hope John keeps dragging JD Hayworth’s name through the mud because that’s exactly where it belongs.

    John McCain on Taxes

Opposed the Bush tax cuts. Voted against repealing the Death Tax. The Club for Growth says McCain’s overall record on taxes “is profoundly disturbing and anti-growth.”

    J.D. Hayworth on Taxes

Helped to author the Bush tax cuts and supports repealing the Death Tax. JD has a higher lifetime rating from Citizens Against Government Waste than John McCain does.

So true, DeAnn! Jeez, how much is McCain paying for these ads? What a joke. And the Snakes in Guam ad bashing J.D. for voting for it, and then we find out McCain voted for it as well – OMG, did someone get fired for that? And the ad above is also so deceptive – here’s Hayworth on Fox setting the record straight:

  16. KevinMyers says:

Jill, I believe it is more than that. I spent two weeks in Guam and snakes are a very big problem there. Snakes are not indigenous and have decimated the bird population not to mention they get into houses, machinery and everything else. If anything, Congress probably should have given Guam, an American territory, them more money. (Just my opinion since it has been 30 years since my visit).

Too bad no one is mentioning the other candidate in this race, Mr. Jim Deakin. Jim knows all about Mr. Hayworth and McCain, and he is the true, Conservative candidate, and he is the only candidate qualified, through petition name and numbers to be on the Primary ballot . He has been on the campaign trail for over a year and has been to almost every nook and cranny in Arizona. He gets amongst the people and stays ’til the meetings or rallies are over, and is taking no big money, other than regular people donations. He walks neighborhoods and attends meetings no matter the size, and he does get back to you when you call or email him—no kidding! Get to know him. http://www.jimdeakin.com, and http://www.deakinvsmccain.com

The whole issue of where JD Hayworth stands on the issue of BO’s birth certificate has been settled. There is no question he is NOT a birther. If John McCain wants to continue to take bad advice from his consultants and waste campaign money on silly web ads, that’s his prerogative. As for JD and his campaign, he will continue discussing the issues and why it is time to bring John McCain home.

  19. kralmajales says:

hahahaha this is all especially funny because John McCain was not born on US soil.

  20. DeAnn says:

Jim Deakin will not be popular in Arizona if he takes the votes that would have put J.D. over the top. I wish he could understand that he is standing in the way of us getting J.D. elected. I’ve heard Jim and he seems like a nice guy. He needs to start with a lower office and work his way up.
