Several news outlets are reporting that state Senator Jonathan Paton will resign from the Senate today. The move had been widely expected but there was not much advanced warning that it would be today.
Paton is seeking the Republican nomination for CD 8 along with Jesse Kelly, Brian Miller, and Andy Goss.

I am appreciative of Senator Paton’s awesome record in the Arizona legislature. I can’t wait to see what he can do at the national level. He’s done so much for transparency, reforming government agencies, and illegal immigration. He has the record and ability to oust the Pima Pelosi in November, I can’t wait to vote for Jonathan Paton this year.
Jonathan Paton has served the State of Arizona with grace and honor. He has proven himself to be a capable and hard-working lawmaker. His decision to resign shows a commitment to the CD-8 race unseen by his predecessors. Thank you for your service, Mr. Paton, and for making the sacrifice to help Republicans take back CD-8.
Jonathan Paton is a superstar. I’ll always admire his dedication to country when he voluntarily enlisted for service in Iraq only to be criticized by Democrats for serving his country. He’s a true hero, patriot and government reform who has challenged the status quo. Can’t wait to see what he can do in Congress!
Senator Paton represents the same republicans that we’ve had for the last decade. He can talk up his record all he want but when it comes down to it he’s just another big government republican that can sweet talk the plebs
I’m really bothered by the negativity among some people. We’re all on the same team folks! Let’s stay positive and work to win! This isn’t about a person, it’s about our freedom and saving our country!
Though Southern AZ loses a great voice–with a tremendous record of service to the community and the state, Jonathan offers an incredible future of service in Congress. Godspeed Senator! We can’t wait for the chance to call you CONGRESSMAN Paton from the 8th district of the Great State of Arizona!!!
Hey, Paton commenting team, it’s on starnet, you all need to go over there and comment away.
Hey blog commenting teams of the other candidates: you all need to go over to starnet and hose Paton then start hosing each other.
Wow Bill… Sorry for voicing my opinion… How dare we comment on candidates in an election year…
Peter, Republicans are not all on the same team … this isn’t a ‘big tent’ its a political party and not a circus – ok, that’s not original – but the point is there are two sides to the Republican Party: the progressive Bull Moose party of TR and JMac, and the conservative platform party of Barry Goldwater.
Voters reject “Democrat Lite” as we learned in 2008. We win when we remain with our conservative values … we loose when we stray into bipartisanship with liberals.
I had hoped that Senator Paton would have remained with us in Phoenix a bit longer before making the leap to Washington … but in politics timing is everything.
Yeah Bill, wouldn’t it be a better world if you could shut up everyone who doesn’t agree with you and only get the comments of people who share your opinions…? What a wonderful world it would be…FOR YOU! Damn that Freedom of Expression!
You know, I think Paton could win this thing going away even without his thought police sucking all the air out of the room. Did kralmajales train you all on how to police the blogs? It’s quite unbecoming to you all and even Ray Charles blind and deceased as he is could even see what’s going on.
Save a few high hard ones for Gabby and don’t piss off the faithful.
Finally, though Jesse’s odds have gotten a little longer with Jonathan entering the race, don’t forget who’s been working her over for the last year while someone was taking the safe route. I believe that Jesse gave local established the right of first refusal on this race. Jesse deserves a whole lot better than what appears to be being worked up for him. So just watch it.
Paton resigning is a sign of commitment that should give Giford’s reason to be concerned. That I will say. Wonder if she’ll also resign in order to campaign full time.
Just don’t knife the Marine who secured the beach
Sweet……now maybe we can get a conservative into the LD30 Senate seat who is not going to serve with a lifetime rating of 61 from Americans for Prosperity and D’s from the Goldwater Institute then try to claim he is a conservative……Oh and by the way, don’t pay attention to the fact that he was 1 of 4 Republicans to vote for then Gov. Napolitano’s 2008 budget which bankrupted our state.
Good luck finding a real job Jon since your stint as a career politician is over.
Senator Antenori… Sounds damn good!
Just want to spread the word about Lute Olson hosting a fundraiser for Brian Miller. You can get your tickets here: https://secure.piryx.com/donate/edbnTrxc/brianmiller/legendsandleaders
Saving the country must involve a phased wind-down of big government. You can’t just throw people into the street who are currently trapped and dependent and fearful. Ideas are needed along with ideology/philosophy. Miller seems an idiologue. Kelly seems solid but young. Paton has spent time thinking about such matters, but his opportunistic timing causes wonder about whether he is really for us or for himself.
Still listening and deciding.
Thank you Andrew. Specifics are helpful.
Paton’s resignation should remind voters and those here of just how hard he worked, or didn’t work, when this state was facing its darkest hour. If you think this isn’t going to be the easiest campaign Giffords has ever had (facing Paton that is) you are mistaken.
Paton was part of the GOP majority..unified Govt folks…that fought each other tooth and nail and even ended up suing each other rather than to do one thing at all to deal with our budget problems in this state.
He got out because he can’t face his record…or face the tough decisions he and his party is NOT making by kicking a 1 cent sales tax to the voters who will likely vote it down…leaving the state in even bigger trouble.
I don’t want someone who cant even act on behalf of the citizens of this state to represent our nation.
